Sooraj Pancholi (born 9 November 1990) is an Indian actor who appears in Hindi-language films. The son of actors Aditya Pancholi and Zarina Wahab, he debuted with the romantic action film Hero (2015) for which he won a Filmfare award for Best Newcomer. He next played a soldier in Satellite Shankar (2019).
Early life
Pancholi was born on 9 November 1990 to Aditya Pancholi and Zarina Wahab in Mumbai. His parents are also Bollywood actors He has a sister Sana Pancholi, and his grandfather Rajan Pancholi was a filmmaker.
Career
Sooraj was an assistant director on films such as Guzaarish and Ek Tha Tiger. In 2015, he made his acting debut in the romantic action film Hero, which earned him a Filmfare Award for Best Newcomer in 2016. He then acted in Satellite Shankar which released on 8 November 2019. He has also been cast in the upcoming Indian dance film Time to Dance. He has also appeared in the music videos GF BF (2016) and Dim Dim Lights (2019).
Personal life
In 2013, Pancholi dated actress Jiah Khan, who died of suicide in June of that year. Based on Khan’s suicide note, which blamed the couple’s strained relationship as a reason for her death, Pancholi was arrested and interviewed under suspicion he abetted Khan’s suicide. The suicide note reportedly stated that Khan was subject to torture and abuse by Pancholi. In 2018 Pancholi was formally charged with abetting Khan’s suicide.
The criminal case was expected to begin in March 2018, but as of November 2019, it had not begun yet, which Pancholi attributed to Khan’s mother’s refusal to proceed. Pancholi has denied involvement in Khan’s death, describing himself as a scapegoat for her decision to end her life.

| Controversy | In 2013, he was interrogated by the Mumbai Police in Jiah Khan suicide case. It is said that Jiah Khan was in the state of depression because of her falling career and spoiled relationship with Sooraj Pancholi. Jiah Khan Suicide Case Timeline: 3 June 2013- Jiah Khan committed suicide 7 June 2013- Jiah Khan’s sister found a suicide note from Jiah’s apartment, and from Jiah’s phone details it was observed that Sooraj was in a relationship with Jiah, and the letter was hinting at him. 11 June 2013- Sooraj was convicted under Section 306 of abetment to suicide and was subsequently arrested by the Mumbai Police 13 June 2013- Jiah Khan’s post-mortem report confirmed her death by hanging, and Sooraj was taken to the Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai on 14 days remand 1 July 2013- Sooraj was granted bail by the Bombay High Court against a bond of Rs 50,000 2 July 2013- Sooraj Pancholi was not accountable for Jiah Khan’s death as per the Bombay Court’s verdict 4 October 2013- Jiah Khan’s mother filed a plea for the CBI investigation 3 July 2014- High Court ordered CBI’s probe into Jiah Khan suicide case After a series of investigations, on 14 October 2017, Sooraj filed a plea at the Bombay High Court. In the plea, he requested an expedition in the trial proceedings. Jiah Khan’s case was transferred to a special CBI court in 2021. According to the session court judges, “In the present matter, the investigation is carried out by CBI/SCB (which) filed a supplementary charge sheet. The special courts are established for the trial of cases exclusively investigated by the CBI and a special judge is appointed to deal with said cases. I do not have the power to deal with cases filed by the CBI. Therefore, in my view, it is necessary to transfer the present case to CBI court.” The case is still with the special court. |
